I did a test creating a chart using grouping and encountered the same issue you described. Unfortunately I have been unable to find a simple resolution for this error. I am sending this to the developers so it can be rectified in a later release.

Chapter 9 of the manual describes addtional fields and some values that control how the boxes are displayed at import time. Also the URL http://www.orgplus.com/support/orgplus7/OP-0700-S2006.htm has more controls. I use these in a non-displayed field in my Excel spreadsheet. Whenever the data changes the chart is easily re-created. I haven't tried if the 'Format' and 'BreakAt' fields works during refresh.
